The second weekend in August is when they have the Brecon jazz festival. David & I live in Cardiff and don't have a car, so we decided to hire one and go to the festival on the Saturday. We'd never been before, and both of us were really looking forward to it. Some fantastic bands were playing, and we had a wonderful time.
The car didn't have to go back until the Monday morning, so we thought we might as well take advantage of having it. On Sunday afternoon, we picked up some pasties and drinks from the local supermarket and set off for a drive and a picnic. We finally ended up in the Mumbles, near Swansea, sitting on a hillside, looking down over a beautiful little cove.
When we'd finished eating, I packed up all the wrappers in the cool bag and said that we should be off. David said that he had one more thing to do, bent down to his bag and, to my great shock, pulled out a ring box, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.
I was slightly hysterical, I have to admit, as the surprise was too much for me. He had to prompt me for an answer. Of course, it was "Yes!" He slipped my engagement ring onto my finger, and that was the first time I saw it. I was shocked again by how well he'd chosen. Later, he told me that he'd been carrying the ring box around all day at the festival, but we'd been having such a good time he didn't want to detract from the pleasure we were taking in the music by asking me.
Good thing he didn't. I wasn't fit for much that Sunday evening. All I did was grin, telephone my family and feel deeply, deeply surprised and happy.
