Your Dream Wedding Cake

Posted by Mary Frederick (Jan 8,2010)

Never before has dessert been quite so important. When you have any other event, this is just another extension of the meal. However when it comes to your wedding cake, it is so much more. Your wedding cake should be beautiful, delicious, and of course be a reflection of the type of wedding that you want to have. This can be a particularly fun part of the wedding planning--you get to go taste test cake samples! You don't want this aspect of the wedding planning to be stressful, so it can help to go into your potential bakers with some ideas if possible.

First and foremost, think of the type of wedding that you plan on having. By the time you are looking into your wedding cake, you should hopefully already have your reception venue picked. It's also helpful if you have your color scheme and even theme determined as well. All of those elements can be great to include as a part of your wedding cake. You don't want to bombard the cake with too much, but you do want to include any special touches that would be pertinent. If you know that your girls will be wearing lavender and have therefore make this and a pastel pink your official wedding colors, then you want that to be reflected somehow on your cake.

Start by asking around for bakeries that either get good word of mouth or that your reception venue recommends. You want to be sure that the cake is exactly what you envision, and therefore you want to go with any recommendations that you can get. Make appointments to go visit with a couple of bakeries to see how they handle the wedding cake process and what options that you have. You want to go for flavors that will appeal to the crowds and/or that go with your theme. If you are having an outdoor wedding or one on a waterfront, then go with light flavors such as vanilla or even something fruit inspired.

You can make your wedding cake truly unique and special with a few nice touches. Here are some ideas to make your cake really hold a special place on your wedding day:

  • Consider using fresh flowers on the wedding cake. Work with your baker and your flower so that they can coordinate this together and use flowers that you are using throughout your bouquets and centerpieces.

  • Find little elegant touches in your color scheme that you can incorporate into the cake design. Think of using these colors as different colors of icing for a special accent, or add in something cute and unique like ribbons. Work with your baker to determine how you can incorporate these colors into the overall design.

  • Go with something totally different that fits your theme or personality. If you want a cake designed to look like a princess palace, then find a baker that can make that happen for you.

  • Consider the more unique trends such as a groom's cake. This can be a simple cake made for the groom specifically that represents something that they enjoy like football. Not only does this make something special for the man of the day, but it also makes for an adorable conversation piece.

If you are looking to save some money, work with your baker to figure out how you can have the wedding cake for everyone to see but then have the staff cutting up sheet cake in the back to accommodate the number of guests you have. You want to find a baker that can work with you on your needs and that you have confidence in to help create the cake of your dreams. Remember that your perfect wedding cake should not only be beautiful, but also delicious. So enjoy the cake samples and the journey to find your perfect cake!
