Music For Your Wedding

Posted by Mary Frederick (Mar 12,2009)

Sometimes people underplay just how important music can be to their wedding. If you think about it, music is a big part of the ceremony as it binds everything together. Music also plays a big role in the reception because it will dictate the tone. If you want a fun filled reception where people are dancing the night away for example, then you need to have music to support it.

Start with one thing at a time. Focus on your ceremony, the location, the tone, and how you envision it. If you are having your ceremony at a Church or synagogue, then you may be a bit more limited. You can however incorporate certain songs and specific instruments into your musical selection, so consider your options. Having horns or a piano player as part of your ceremony can make it really special. Think through the musical selections and if at all possible, consider adding in some songs that are special to you as a couple. This can truly customize the ceremony and make it even more meaningful.

If you are having a cocktail hour or some time in between for guests to enjoy appetizers and some conversation before the reception begins, consider some soft cocktail music. This can be accomplished through a piano player in the background, guitars, or even a harp player. All of these signify classy and elegant choices and will be perfect for the setting.

The choice for the reception itself usually boils down to either a band or a DJ. Both are good choices so it really comes down to personal choice. Think of what will get the crowd going, if you have a dancing type of crowd and want a wide array of musical selections, then you may want to consider a DJ. A band will likely play more classics and may be more interactive with the crowd. They have more of a presence, but may cost you significantly more.

Before you make any musical selections, make an appointment to go see them in action. Find out where they will be playing and make it a point to go see them in action. Ask them for a sample CD so that you can hear their music before you book them for your special day. If you have any special requests or songs that you want included, then you want to mention these in your meetings. The last thing you want is a band, musician, or DJ showing up on your special day and then finding that they can't play your song. Go through the flow of the day for which they will be involved with so that they understand their role and what will be going on around them. Be sure to cover the all important aspects of the wedding such as your walk down the aisle, your first dance, your introduction, the garter toss, and anything else that you want music included for. It can only help you to be prepared and then you can be sure that the  music is just perfect for your most important day.
