Is A Green Wedding Right For You?

Posted by Kathryn Lindamood (Apr 5,2009)

In the last couple of years the push for green products has increased tenfold. We talk about green fuels for our vehicles, green products for cleaning, and even green clothing options. What you may not know is that one of the newest wedding trends is the “green wedding”.

What is a Green Wedding?

A “green wedding” is a wedding where the bride and groom use environmentally conscious products for their ceremony and reception. They choose products that can be recycled or have already been recycled. They look for products that are made using limited resources and they encourage their guests to join them in the green movement.

How Do You Go Green?

Going green has become so popular that many wedding planners are jumping in and providing custom green weddings for their clients.  If you can afford a wedding planner that will take some of the hassle out of the planning, but if you can’t don’t worry! You can plan a green wedding on your own.

  • Buy wedding invitations that come from recycled materials. Another great idea, especially if you aren’t having a formal wedding is to invite your friends and family via email.

  • Purchase slightly used wedding dresses online or from your local thrift store. You will be amazed at the amount of money you can save by doing this.

  • Use heirloom jewelry. Lots of resources are used to mine diamonds and gold. If you have a family ring that has been passed down through the generations wear it rather than a new ring.

  • Choose locally grown flowers for your ceremony and locally grown food for your reception if possible.

Can You Afford to Go Green?

That’s a question a lot of people ask when considering a green wedding. The answer is yes. Some green items may cost more but by reusing products you can cut down on the cost. While you may not be able to go completely green you can certainly put add green elements to your wedding and reception.
