A Thoughtful Color Combination Makes A Difference

Posted by Kathryn Lindamood (Mar 2,2010)

Mine were sapphire blue, silver, and butter yellow. A friend chose hunter green, and peach. I’ve even seen red and green paired together. What am I talking about? The wedding colors, of course.

Colors are one of the first decisions a bride has to make in regards to planning her wedding. The colors chosen are important because most of the decoration and even some of the apparel worn by the bridal party are based on these colors. Some brides choose only one or two contrasting hues. Others may choose to have three or more colors in their wedding. It’s all up to the personal preference of the bride.

Rather than just picking a few random colors that you like take into consideration how they will be used in your ceremony. Your wedding colors should be present in the flowers carried by your bridesmaids and should be integrated into the boutonnieres worn by the groomsmen. Your bridesmaid’s dresses will be made out of the most prominent color while the men in the bridal party might wear a vest in the same color as the dresses. Considering the skin tone of your wedding party and what colors look best will help to ensure your friends aren’t miserable in their clothing.

Another thing to consider when picking colors for your
wedding is the time of year the ceremony will be held. There is no rule that
states you have to choose certain color schemes for certain times of the year
though a majority of brides follow a few basic guidelines.  Weddings held in summer and fall tend to have darker colors while those held in the spring and summer have muted colors and often pastels.

Depending on whether or not you choose to have live flowers in your ceremony may help to dictate the colors you choose. Not all shades of flower appear naturally and while artificial flowers are great for decorations it’s always a better option to have live flowers if you can afford them. On the other hand live flowers can be dyed to just about any shade you desire for an additional cost.

Whether you choose to stick with the traditional colors or opt for a palate that is bold and bright have fun with planning your wedding. Even if you can’t find the exact same shade of burgundy in a dress and flower everything will look fine in the end and sometimes these subtle changes add depth to your bouquet.
